Biography
Dr. Hughes’ research focuses on critical media literacy and gender studies. In her current work teaching literacy and arts-based research (CTL7000, CTL7016, CTL1099, CTL7085, CTL5011), she guides students in critically examining issues in literacy, including the ways media can challenge social inequity. Her critical arts-based research course draws on her cross-disciplinary work in public health and education, where she uses institutional ethnography to investigate the unique health care challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness, including barriers to primary care, substance use services, and mental health supports.
