Redab Al-Janaideh

Dr. Redab Al-Janaideh

PhD, Developmental Psychology & Education

Redab’s research focuses on language and literacy development in bilingual children. Her focus is on the development of narrative skills in bilingual Arabic-speaking children, and their contributions to reading comprehension. Her dissertation focuses on the oral language, literacy and well-being of refugee children, as well as explores the effects of cognitive, social-emotional factors, and interrupted education on refugee children’s literacy performance. Redab believes that mental wellness and high cognitive skills are key to a successful language learning process for refugee children and youth.

Diana Burchell Alumni

Dr. Diana Burchell

PhD, School & Clinical Child Psychology

Diana Burchell is a postdoctoral fellow in the department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Alberta under the supervision of Dr. Andrea MacLeod. She is an English, French and Special Education high school teacher. She is passionate about investigating and improving the accessibility of our education system for multilingual students and students with disabilities. 

Roksana (Roxy) Dobrin-De Grâce

Roksana (Roxy) Dobrin-De Grâce

2nd Year PhD Student, Research Adviser

Roksana (Roxy) Dobrin-De Grâce is a second-year PhD student in the psychological science stream at Ryerson University in the Early Childhood Cognition Lab. She has been working with the Multilingualism & Literacy Lab since 2020 for her practicum requirement, and has stayed on to continue working with Diana Burchell on the International Bilingual Education (IBE). Roxy’s own research focuses on cross-cultural differences in the development of politeness norms as well as selective social learning preferences in children.

Michelle Huo

Dr. Michelle Huo

PhD, Developmental Psychology & Education

Michelle completed her PhD in the Developmental Psychology & Education program and is currently involved in the International Bilingual Education (IBE) project. Her doctoral research focused on using dynamic assessment tools to predict reading risk among children enrolled in French Immersion. Her broader research interests include examining the interaction between reading fluency and oral language skills among linguistically diverse students.

Dianne Macdonald

Dr. Dianne Macdonald

PhD, Educational Psychology, McGill University

Dianne is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Applied Psychology & Human Development at the Â¥·ïÌìÌà (OISE). Her research focuses on biliteracy intervention for bilingual children with reading impairment who attend French school. Her study is funded by a Postdoctoral Fellowship from both the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the Fonds de Recherche du Québec - Société et Culture (FRQSC). Dianne is also a practicing Speech-Language Pathologist, working with children, adolescents, and adults with reading and written language disorders.

Sharry Shakory

Dr. Sharry Shakory

PhD Candidate, School & Clinical Child Psychology

Sharry completed her PhD in the School & Clinical Child Psychology (SCCP) program. She received her MA in the SCCP program in 2017. Sharry’s current research is focused on the early identification of French immersion children at-risk for reading difficulties in French and English, as well as the relation between reading difficulties and social-emotional functioning. Her clinical training has focused on comprehensive psychological assessment of cognitive, academic, and socioemotional functioning and evidence-based interventions (primarily CBT and DBT). Clinical populations of interest include children and youth with neurodevelopmental disorders, culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, complex trauma, high-risk behaviors, and psychosomatic presentations.   

Juwairia Sohail

Dr. Juwairia Sohail

PhD, School & Clinical Child Psychology

Juwairia Sohail has a PhD in School & Clinical Child Psychology from the Â¥·ïÌìÌÃ. Her PhD dissertation examines the role of metalinguistic skills in the literacy acquisition of multilingual children. Specifically, she is researching how syntactic and morphological awareness influence within- and cross-language reading comprehension in French immersion students. Her research hopes to inform educational practices and policies geared towards the language and literacy development of students from diverse linguistic backgrounds. As a clinical student, Juwairia also received extensive training in providing evidence-based assessments and treatment. She is passionate about supporting children, adolescents, and families heal, grow, and live meaningful lives.

Carolyn White

Carolyn (Caro) White

2nd Year Master Student, Child Study & Education

Carolyn (Caro) White is a second-year Master’s student at the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education in Child Study & Education. She has been working as a Graduate Assistant with the lab since Spring 2022, mainly on the International Bilingual Education project. She is currently a temporary Ontario Certified Teacher for Kindergarten to Grade 6, and she specializes in French immersion education. She is also currently working in academic intervention and executive function at Bright Lights Psychology Clinic, supervised by Dr. Todd Cunningham.
